How Apps can Transform a Business
Shift from mobile age to mobile-first age
With the gradual shift from mobile to mobile-first age, SMBs and MNCs alike have been investing heavily in customer-facing as well as employee-facing apps to realise productivity and sales improvement. App development vendors, to keep up with this shift, have expanded their value proposition beyond the app and web development, leading to the emergence of multi-experience applications with AI, chatbots and IoT driving the market that is soon going to drive the future impact on business success.
The growing universality of smartphones has increased mobile activities across the globe where apps play a dominant role in impacting business numbers – better outreach, improved sales and marketing activities, building a loyal audience, customer support, and overall improved efficiency of the business. From the age of mobile to the age of a mobile-first strategy, businesses have been heavily leveraging mobile apps as a business tool.
Taking inspiration from the customer-facing and partner-facing apps, companies have started investing heavily in web and mobile apps for internal operations as well.
Business apps for internal operations are being built in the interest of the organizations to streamline complex business activities. They aim to serve as productivity enhancement tools that optimize processes, manage data, reduce manual data-entry jobs, automate workflows, and help put work on autopilot. Role-based user views and security features like remote wipe, strong encryption modules and containerization are enabling businesses to keep data secure.
From the end user’s point of view, mobile apps allow them anytime, anywhere access to what they need. From the organization’s perspective, apps allow them ease of scalability and collation of accurate digital data in addition to process automation, faster approvals and efficiency gains.
SMBs to MNCs companies are coming up with apps to provide better customer experience, partner experience and employee experience to become more competitive in the market. Mobile apps are projected to have the most impact on business success by 2020, according to a Gartner report.
The report surveys nearly 300 business professionals who have developed and launched at least three types of applications in their organizations. Among organizations that have deployed at least three different types of applications, apart from web apps, the most common type are mobile apps (91%). Some 61% of respondents say that cloud-hosted artificial intelligence (AI) tools are the most popular technology that supports multi-experience application development. This was followed by native iOS and Android development (48%) and mobile backend services (45%), the report found.
“App development platform vendors are also expanding their value proposition beyond mobile apps and web development to meet the rising user and industry demands,” says Jason Wong, research vice president at Gartner. “This has led to the emergence of multi-experience development platforms, which are used in developing chat, voice, AR, and now wearable experiences in support of the digital business.”
Multi-experience applications are the future.
Users are no longer typing in URLs into the browser; consumers or employees alike need the information to be more accessible, faster and personalized- accessible from the web, mobile, tablets, voice, smart devices.
The next wave of apps will need to integrate futuristic technologies like AI, IoT, chatbots and voice inputs. While the cost of development might rise, the ROI from a futuristic app is going to be certainly high by creating an ambient experience that is a result of combining technologies. This trend is believed to replace technology-literate people with people-literate technology.
Increased productivity, increased output, enhanced workflow management and an overall boost in innovation, apps simplify complex operations. Enterprise apps are used to manage operations across the HR, accounts, sales & delivery teams, inventory to name a few. When coupled with AI and IoT, these apps can facilitate the business in controlling their processes on fingertips with the flexibility to add or remove devices as per the changing requirements and respond instantly to varying inputs. IoT will expand the functionality of the apps that in turn delimit the apps from just being display and data collection tools to a more advanced asset management controllers.
The no-code/ low code app development market is growing in a frenzy, with the skyrocketing demands for enterprise apps and corresponding scarcity of developers. With no shortage of options to choose from, the best no code and low code app development platforms tend to be similar. You can make cross-platform apps out of them, manage everyday workflows, and even add business rules and validations to control access as well as the data being entered to the apps. While not all, some of these platforms are picking up on the multi-experience trend that the app industry is headed towards.
